Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), has lambasted the Nigeria Police. This is because police arraigning Kogi-West lawmaker, Senator Dino Melaye in court on a stretcher.
The senior advocate said, “The arraignment of Senator Dino Melaye on a stretcher in Abuja on Wednesday. And Lokoja on Thursday morning is unacceptable in a civilised society.
“It is particularly degrading and humiliating as it violates the fundamental right to the dignity of his person. Guaranteed by Section 34 of the constitution and Section 7 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.”
Femi Falana, however, stated that Melaye’s ordeal was a reflection of the suffering ordinary Nigerians faced in the hands of security agents on a daily basis.
He, therefore, called on the National Assembly which has protested against Melaye’s arrest, to use the opportunity to call on the relevant agencies to turn a new leaf.
Femi Falana, is a lawyer and human rights activist. He was born on May 20 in Ilawe, Ekiti State. He is 53 years of age
However, he was educated at St. Michael’s Primary School, Ilawe, 1963-1968. Sacred Heart Catholic Seminary, 1971-1975. University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, 1977-1981.
He also attended the Nigeria Law School, Lagos, 1981-1982. He was former president, National Association of Democratic Lawyers. Falana has been head of Femi Falana Chambers since 1991. He was the chairman, West African Bar Association, WABA.
Nevertheless, he contested the governorship election of Ekiti State in 2007. This was under the platform of the National Conscience Party, NCP. He is now the national chairman of the party.
