More than seven persons have escaped death narrowly as a 3-storey building which was under construction collapsed in Aboga Igwuruta Etche local government area of River state Nigeria.
According to an eye witness, the building collapse around 1: 26pm on Saturday when work was still ongoing at the building.
Another eye witness said ” On reaching here, I saw the building collapsing. Some of the workers were able to jump out while others could not before the building collapsed on them. Everyone was rescued but many were injured. And the last person was rescued towards the night as it was getting dark with severe injuries. He was immediately rushed to the hospital”.
A man simply identified as Francis said: ” I heard a loud sound while I was in the house. When I rushed out, I saw the building collapsing. Some people from here and passersby started using axe to break through the debris to rescue the victims before government and police officials join in the rescue”.
According to information, the rescue was made possible by the joint efforts of the villagers, Ikwerre Local Government Area and officials of the River state Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development. also, Ministry of Special Duties deployed excavators, fire trucks and ambulance to ensure timely rescue.
However, information from the commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Rt. Hon. Evans Bipi told newsmen it is unfortunate starting the new year with building collapse. And attributed the incident to the use of substandard materials by the builders.
Locals said this is the 4th building collapse in River state within three months.
