Kelvin Kiptum was the 24 years old Kenyan athlete. Born in 1999, kelvin was the only child of his parents, Samson Cheruiyot and Mary Kangogo. He was married to Asenath Rotich and they had two children.
He was the 2023 World Athlete Of The Year Finalist having won the 2h:00:35″ Pace of 2′:52″/km Chicago Marathon 2023.
When Kelvin Kiptum geared up for Chicago Marathon, former World record holder, Eliud Kipchoge was reportedly afraid that his record has come under threat.
Just as Pulsesports.co.ke reported in October 2023, the emergence of Kelvin terminated Eliud’s record.
Kelvin took to his Facebook page and announced he was heading for the 2023 Bank Of America Chicago Marathon which took place on Sunday, October 8, 2023. Early hours of October 8, Kelvin posted “Today is the day”.
After the marathon Kelvin posted again on his page saying “We said it, we did it! 2:00:35. Today, we made history here in Chicago, Absolutely mind-blowing. Indeed no Human is limited!”.
It was indeed a big surprise to everyone when on February 11, 2023 the world woke up to the death of the World Record holder in a car crash alongside his coach, Gervais Hakizimana. The 24 years old father of two, was killed in a late-night car crash on February 11, just months after shattering the marathon record in Chicago.
On Friday, 23rd February 2023, top athletes and dignitaries led hundreds of mourners at the funeral of the Kenya’s world marathon record-holder Kelvin Kiptum. This took place in the nation’s athletics heartland where he was born, trained, and died. President William Ruto was among the mourners of the fallen hero.
However, after the death of Kelvin Kiptum, some events unfolded and more have been unfolding. Below are few things that has happened behind the athlete.
1: Three men who visited the home of Kevin Kiptum days before the car crash were arrested. It was alleged that the three men were stalking Kelvin’s home days before the unfortunate incident.
One report had it that the three men said they came from State House. And one of them is Kiptum’s vehicle mechanic.
Police is investigating to know if they have a hand in the athlete’s death.
2: Kevin Kiptum’s alleged secret girlfriend, Edna Awuor Otieno emerged.
Edna claimed she has a child with Kelvin. While the family were mourning the demise of Kelvin, Miss Otieno is busy drafting the sharing formula of Kelvin’s wealth.
Edna flaunts photos she took with Kelvin with Valentine Gifts he gave her days before his death as evidence of their secret affair. She further wrote “He really loved me. I wish ningejua hii ingekuwa gift ya kuniambia goodbye. Rest in peace Kevo,” she wrote on her Tiktok account.
Many Kenyans were not happy with the 22 years old lady who headed to court to seek order to halt Kelvin’s burial. Although the High court of Eldoret threw her suit out, many people see her as a gold digger and insensitive being.
3: The Kenyan government built an emergency house for Kelvin’s family before his burial. The house cost the government Ksh7M.
4: Former Marathon Record Holder, Eliud Kipchoge did not attend the burial. While who is who in Kenya and world wide attended Kelvin’s burial, former Record holder Eliud was nowhere to be seen.
This was condemned by many. However, no statement has come from Eliud to know the reason for his absence.
5: President Ruto of Kenya promises to give Kelvin Kiptum’s wife a job and the sum of Ksh.5 Million cash.
