A family of five including mother and her four children is reportedly gone after consuming a popular delicacy in Imo state of Nigeria.
According to the information, the incident occurred on 2nd day of January 2025 in Umuebi Amuzu in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo state.
The food poisoning deaths occurred less than 24 hours after consuming oil bean flakes [a popular food synonymous to Imo citizens].
Oil bean is botanically referred to as pentaclethra macrophylla.
Although there is no medical report backing the above claims, locals insist that death after consuming oil bean is common in the area. An occurrence they attribute to mistake resulting in the inability to carefully removing the wild poisonous “Ububa” seed from the oil bean seed.
A local said that the “Ububa” seed has almost same features with the oil bean seed. And requires an expert who is familiar with the oil been seed to separate the poisonous seed from the oil bean. He further said that one seed of “Ububa” in a full basin of oil bean is a threat to lives of anyone that consumes it.
Nevertheless, it was gathered that the family of five had oil bean meal as their last food on that particular day.
It was reported that the oil bean seed was purchased, processed and prepared by the late mother, Mrs. Fidelia Ugbodo Chimezie.
The information further said that the family started having diarrhea moments after eating the meal. While three of them died instantly, the remaining two died later at Federal Medical Center Owerri Imo state.
Following the incident, angry youths from the late Fidelia’s village, Oboh Amuzu in same local government area besieged the palace of the Amuzu Nweafor traditional ruler, His Royal Majesty, Eze Denise Nnaji. Alleging that their sister, Fidelia and her four children were victims of murder.
Nevertheless, information from the angry youths is alleging “Spiritual killings” following a land dispute between the family and another family.
An anonymous source said that the dead family was taken to a local shrine three years ago by a particular man.
On that fateful day, the same man that had dispute with them allegedly dined with them without undergoing the necessary traditional rites of cleansing. It was alleged that after dining with the man, the deaths occurred.
Meanwhile, Umuebi Amuzu indigenes have vowed to unravel the mystery behind the incidents.
