MY FAMILY WILL FACE THE LAW IF OUR WEALTH CAME ILLEGALLY-President Uhuru Kenyatta
President Uhuru Kenyatta said he was okay with the lifestyle audit going back to his father and Kenya’s first president the late MzeeJomo Kenyatta’s era.
My wealth and assets were publicly known. Uhuru said he declares his wealth annually but was ready to go to court for any illegitimate acquisition if found.
He said he would never offer immunity to his kinsmen in war against graft. Kapseret MP had challenged Uhuru to allow lifestyle audit to be dated back to his father’s era.
He said there was no sacred cows when it came to proper utilisation of public resources. He however said his family members should not expect to be spared in case they be found to have engaged in corrupt dealings.
President Uhuru Kenyatta said he would allow the lifestyle audit to be dated back to the era of his father.
He claims it’s political blackmail Speaking to BBC HardTalk host Zeinab Badawi on Wednesday, August 29, in an interview monitored by TUKO.co.ke,
Uhuru said he was okay with the audit being extended to his entire family and his father’s time if it would help win the war against corruption. He was responding to a demand by Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi who said Uhuru should allow the lifestyle audit to cover his entire family and even dated back to the times his father was the president of Kenya.
” As a public servant, I am supposed to make my wealth known and we declare every year. What we own, and what we have is known to the public. If there is an instance where someone can say what we have done is not legitimate, say it, and we are ready to face any court. We can even go back to my grandfather and great grandfather.
Uhuru said he would not cushion his relatives found culpable of corruption. The president was categorical and firm that blood ties would not make him compromise the war against corruption which he admitted is the legacy he wants to leave when he exits State House in 2022.
“Regardless who you are even if you are my family, I have said clearly agencies are free to interrogate you, prosecute and convict you. It has begun with MPs and individuals who nobody thought would ever be arrested. It is now upon the courts to do their part through expeditious determination of cases,” explained Uhuru.
He disclosed the war on graft was not an overnight thought and that he had widely consulted and engaged partners from within and outside the country to help him establish a structure to slay corruption which he referred to as a “dragon and beast”
According to Philomena Mwilu “We have been working silently to strengthen institutions and in conjunction with different countries which offered training and support to successfully prosecute suspects. That is why you see regenerated institutions.
We are ready to support judiciary to ensure prompt administration of justice,” Uhuru added. He said despite the fact that the lifestyle audit was not underpinned in the law, his administration was lobbying with MPs to address the gap but reiterated anyone who wanted to continue serving in the executive must undergo the audit.
